Introducing BreatHE IN: Building Healthier Environments Indoors Network

BreatHE IN: Building Healthier Environments Indoors Network was launched on 19th November. This EPSRC-funded micro network + is led by the University of Birmingham and its goal is too advance knowledge and awareness on healthier indoor environments by promoting holistic solutions with the built environment at its core. Among the activities planned by BreatHE IN, Sandpits are of particular interest. These will be two in-person events that will include networking and workshops to shape and fund high-risk/high-reward feasibility studies. BreatHE IN is devoted to support early-career researchers with bursaries to attend events and a mentorship scheme.

The network launch was a testimony to the vibrancy of the engineering healthier environments community, bringing together in Birmingham a substantial representation of partners and stakeholders, including funding bodies, academics, companies and policy-making institutions. Sister networks such as GREENIN were present supporting the event and introducing their own aims and agenda.

To keep updated and  involved with the activities proposed by BreatHE IN, please contact the network  manager Emilie Cosway (e.cosway@bham.ac.uk)  or network lead Bruño Fraga (b.fraga@bham.ac.uk).

Introducing AirHub

Air Hub is a newly EPSRC funded, 2-year micro network plus, considering PM2.5 indoors: what it is, how it affects us, and what we should do  about it. The Network is led by Abigail Hathway (University of Sheffield) and  supported by a multidisciplinary team of co-I’s at the University of Sheffield  (Simon Johnston, Chantelle Wood), Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust  (Heather Elphick), City St. George’s University of London (Sierra Clark), UCL  (Gergo Baranyi), University of York (Sarah West) and the University of  Liverpool (Jonathan Higham).

A workshop on Health Impacts of Indoor Particulate Matter is scheduled for 5 Feb 2026.

Exciting news! The CHEPA tool is out now!

The CHEPA (Classroom HEPA) impact calculator is a tool that helps estimate how an air filter unit could impact air quality and energy consumption in a classroom. It’s free, quick to use, and designed for non-experts. Find out more here

Urban Greening ‘How to’ Toolkit out now!

The RECLAIM team is thrilled to announce the launch of the Urban Greening “How-To” Toolkit for local authorities, councillors and community leaders!

Developed through the UKRI-funded RECLAIM Network Plus, with contributions from local councils and experts at the University of Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE), this free toolkit offers practical guidance to bring more green space into our towns and cities.

It provides easy-to-follow advice on using trees, green roofs, rain gardens, ponds and more to tackle urban challenges like air pollution, flooding, heatwaves, noise and biodiversity loss. By bridging scientific research with on-the-ground insights, the toolkit empowers local decision-makers to implement effective nature-based solutions for healthier, more resilient communities.
