Parks can cool neighborhoods and cut pollution hundreds of meters beyond their boundaries, study finds
New research led by the University of Surrey’s Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) highlights the important role urban parks can play in reducing heat, air pollution and noise. Published in City and Environment Interactions, the study found that Stoke Park in Guildford recorded over 11% lower PM10 levels, cooler temperatures, and significantly lower noise levels than surrounding built-up areas. Researchers also found that the cooling effect extended beyond the park boundary, while tree-covered and grassland areas improved thermal comfort by up to 8.5°C. The findings provide valuable evidence to support nature-based solutions and urban planning for healthier, more climate-resilient communities, closely aligning with GREENIN’s mission to promote greener environments for health and wellbeing.
