As summer progresses, GREENIN continues to strengthen its network through new research, knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration. In this edition, we are delighted to launch the GREENIN Workshop Call, inviting organisations across the UK to develop collaborative workshops that will help advance indoor greening, healthy buildings and indoor environmental quality. We also share the latest research highlights, celebrate the achievements of members of our community, and showcase GREENIN's contribution to national events and partnerships. This month, we are pleased to feature Professor Kamaldeep Bhui CBE in our latest GREENIN Academic Spotlight, recognising his expertise in public mental health, health inequalities and preventive medicine. You'll also find updates on new publications, collaboration across the healthy buildings community, and achievements from GREENIN partners, all reflecting our shared commitment to creating healthier, more sustainable and resilient indoor environments. "Creating healthier indoor environments requires collaboration across disciplines, sectors and communities. GREENIN brings together researchers, industry, policymakers and practitioners to share knowledge, develop innovative solutions and turn research into real-world impact. Launch of the GREENIN Workshop Call
GREENIN is inviting applications to host a one-day collaborative workshop focused on indoor greening, healthy buildings and indoor environmental quality. Successful applicants can receive up to £2,000 to support eligible organisational costs. We welcome applications from universities, research organisations, industry, SMEs, public sector organisations, charities and community groups across the UK. Workshops should promote interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement while helping shape future research and innovation in healthier indoor environments.

GREENIN at the Healthy Buildings Network Showcase 2026
GREENIN Micro Network Plus was pleased to participate in the Healthy Buildings Network Showcase held in Leeds on 2 July 2026. Representing GREENIN, Professor Prashant Kumar and Dr Akash Biswal joined a panel discussion exploring the future of healthy buildings research. The event brought together researchers, policymakers and industry stakeholders to strengthen collaborations and explore future opportunities across the healthy built environment community. We thank the Healthy Buildings Network Leeds and Marco-Felipe King for organising a successful event.
GREENIN Advisory Board Member Wins Two National Awards
Congratulations to GREENIN Advisory Board member Joanne Harrison, Director of Harrison Architectural Heritage, on receiving two SME News UK Enterprise Awards 2026: Best Historic Property Retrofit Specialists 2026 – West Yorkshire Community Engagement Excellence Award 2026 These awards recognise Joanne and her team's outstanding work in historic building conservation, sustainable retrofit and community engagement.
Strengthening GREENIN's Research Expertise: Spotlight on Professor Kamaldeep Bhui
GREENIN is pleased to highlight Professor Kamaldeep Bhui CBE, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford and a valued member of the GREENIN academic team. Professor Bhui is internationally recognised for his work in public mental health, epidemiology, health inequalities and preventive medicine. Within GREENIN, he provides scientific leadership on the health impacts of indoor greening, supporting research design, intervention co-design and evaluation.
New Publication
Indoor Plants as Climate-Ready Infrastructure: GREENIN's First Major Research Output
GREENIN's first major publication, "Ten Questions on Indoor Greening and Environmental Quality", brings together 35 experts to examine how indoor plants and engineered green systems influence indoor environmental quality. The paper introduces a practical framework and matrix to support future research and implementation of indoor greening.
New Publication: Exploring the Impact of Domestic Gardens on Local Air Quality
GREENIN is pleased to share a new publication in Nature-Based Solutions entitled: Impact of Domestic Gardens on Local Air Quality – How Much Do We Know? Co-authored by Professor Prashant Kumar, the paper provides valuable insights into how domestic gardens may contribute to healthier and more sustainable urban environments.

Empowering Young Climate Detectives to Build Cooler Schools
Around 500 primary school pupils across South East England have participated in the University of Surrey's Heat-Cool Programme, using thermal cameras and real temperature data to investigate heat around their schools and develop practical cooling solutions. The project demonstrated that more than 80% of participating pupils maintained or improved their understanding of climate change.

News from Our EPSRC Sister Network: Three Sandpit Projects Funded
GREENIN is pleased to share news from the Healthy Buildings Network (HBN). Three interdisciplinary projects have been funded through the HBN Sandpit Programme, bringing together researchers, public health organisations and industry partners to address key challenges in indoor environmental quality and public health. Taking the Urban Greening ‘How To’ Toolkit Global
Building on the original Urban Greening 'How To' Toolkit developed by the RECLAIM Network Plus, three international versions have now been co-created for Ethiopia, Malawi and Nepal. Developed with in-country partners and supported by University of Surrey ODA funding, the toolkits provide practical, evidence-based guidance for planning green–blue infrastructure in diverse international contexts.
